SIGNS OF OCULAR ISSUES THAT WARRANT ATTENTION.

Stye,a symptom of eye issues.

In our last post, we discussed some eye symptoms we should never ignore, and today, we will discuss more of those symptoms. Walk with us as we find out.

OTHER SYMPTOMS OF EYE PROBLEMS WE SHOULD NOT IGNORE.

  1. RED EYES: When our eyes become irritated or inflamed, the blood vessels expand, causing the white parts of our eyes to appear pink or red. Red eyes can be due to several factors like allergies, smoke, and pollutants in the air around you. If you suddenly notice red eyes, you may have an eye condition that can potentially cause long-term eye damage and even blindness. Injuries and conditions that can cause extended red eye are Uveitis, Blepharitis, Conjunctivitis (pink eye), and Glaucoma.
  2. BLURRY VISION: Sometimes, vision changes are far less dramatic. Patients often start to notice that something seems off. Their vision does not seem as good as it used to be, but they are unsure why it happened. If you start observing that your vision seems blurry or hazy, like you are looking through a piece of glass, you should schedule an appointment with an optometrist because this could be a sign of cataracts.
  3. ODD-SIZED PUPILS: For most people, the dark spot in the center of the eye grows or shrinks to control how much light enters the eye. But at times, it appears to be stuck wide open (mydriasis) or small (miosis). Or both eyes may not be the same size. The various causes of these effects may include nerve damage, migraines, medications, or eye surgery.
  4. A LUMP: It may be tempting, but never pop one yourself. Styes are red, painful lumps on your lashes or under your lids caused by bacteria. A chalazion is a painless swollen bump on your eyelid from a clogged oil gland. Soak a clean washcloth in warm water, hold it on your eye for 10 to 15 minutes, and gently massage. Do this three to five times daily. If that does not help, see your eye doctor.
  5. DRY OR ITCHY EYES: Occasional eye dryness that responds to over-the-counter eye lubricants is rarely something to worry about. However, chronically dry eyes that cause discomfort and disrupt daily life must not be ignored. Report such cases to a qualified eye care specialist. Sometimes, dry eyes are a problem with the tear-producing glands surrounding the eyes. Dry eyes can also be a symptom of an underlying autoimmune disorder, such as Sjögren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and thyroid eye disease. Eye allergies and environmental conditions such as wind, smoke, dry air, or medications can cause dry eyes. Failing to treat chronically dry eyes can lead to inflammation of the conjunctiva, abrasions or ulcers of the cornea, and eye infections, particularly if the cornea is damaged.
  6. BURNING OR STINGING: It is often a sign of tired or irritated eyes, possibly from hay fever, dust, or smoke. It may also be a sign of Blepharitis, a buildup of bacteria that causes dandruff-like flakes on your eyelids, or dry eye when your eyes do not make good-quality tears or enough of them. A more significant concern is an inflamed cornea, also known as keratitis.

CONCLUSION

Eye problems come in many forms, and the only way to properly combat them is to ensure that you visit a knowledgeable, experienced eye doctor. Eye symptoms, particularly sudden vision change and pain, can be signs of consequential eye conditions or even systemic illnesses such as stroke, and they should prompt you to seek immediate medical attention. Other symptoms may not seem urgent, but any persistent discomfort, changes in vision, or changes in your eye appearance merits a visit to an eye doctor to check out what is wrong. Addressing eye problems is your best bet for preserving your vision for the long term.
