In our last post, we asked if using screens in dark rooms was a good practice, and here is the answer.
Science has shown that our pupil (the black opening at the center of the eye) usually dilates when in a dark room. The pupil helps control the amount of light that goes into the eyes; it contracts with high illumination and dilates with dim illumination. You know what that means for Mr. John, who sits in front of a device (screen) that emits harmful rays (blue lights) in a dark room, when his pupils are fully opened (dilated), right? Unfortunately, this does not refer to Mr. John alone but to everyone who indulges in such practice.
More so, as each scene is displayed, the screen illumination is not steady, therefore causing the eye muscles to continue to adjust by contracting and relaxing all through your screen time, and this may cause issues such as;
- EYE STRAIN: dim illumination reduces screen visibility, making it harder to see your screen. Hence, prolonged exposure leads to headaches, dry eyes syndrome, and blurred vision, contributing to digital eye syndrome.
- BLUE LIGHT EXPOSURE: Screens emit blue lights. Hence, the pupils are fully open to enable you to see clearly in the dark, thereby increasing the exposure of harmful rays to the eyes, causing damage that increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
- DISRUPTED SLEEP: Exposure to screens (blue lights) before bedtime suppresses melatonin production (hormones that regulate the sleeping-waking-up routine), reducing sleep quality or making it harder to fall asleep. It is contra-indicated for people with insomnia.
- GLARE AND CONTRAST: Screens in dark rooms create harsh glare and contrast, causing eye fatigue and discomfort.
- POOR ERGONOMICS: insufficient lighting while using screens can lead to poor posture and decreased productivity.
At this juncture, we believe your guess is as good as ours; screen time in dark rooms is NOT A GOOD PRACTICE. Therefore, for further inquiries, Contact us at TREETOP VISION EYE CENTRE (TREVEC), the best eye clinic in Utako Abuja.
