Hopefully, you have understood what eye health nutrition entails. Therefore, we will proceed to the healthy nutrition tips that help prevent some vision disorders.
HELPFUL EYE HEALTH NUTRITION
Some nutrients that are helpful to the eyes include:
VITAMIN C
Vitamin C is essential in blood vessel health and the absorption of iron. Studies have proven that vitamin C helps lower the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and our eyes require high amounts of these antioxidants as they play protective roles.
SOURCES: Vitamin C is in Oranges, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli, kale, pineapples, and kiwi.
OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS
Omega 3 fatty acids play a significant role in maintaining healthy retinas. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid present with Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Studies have linked DHA deficiency with poor visual development in infants, dry eye syndrome, and diabetic retinopathy.
SOURCES: Walnuts, sardine, salmon, fish oil supplements, mackerel, herring, tuna and so on
BIOFLAVONOIDS
It is called flavonoids or vitamin P; bioflavonoids have several health benefits, such as cardiovascular health, protection against certain cancers, anti-aging qualities, and protection against infections. In addition, it aids with protecting against cataract and macular degeneration and also supports cornea health.
SOURCES: High amounts of flavonoids are in cherries, blueberries, tea, and red wine.
ZINC
Zinc is essential because it brings vitamin A from the liver to the retina to produce melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Vision impairments such as poor night vision (Nyctalopia) and cloudy cataracts are due to zinc deficiency.
SOURCES: Red meat, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, oysters and so on
