A PARENT’S GUIDE: WHY EYE EXAMS MATTER FOR KIDS

Children vision warning signs

Let us tell you about Joy, a bright and curious 7-year-old who loved to learn and play with her friends. Recently, her teachers and parents noticed that she was having trouble with her schoolwork and playtime activities.

During lessons, Joy would squint to see the board and ask to sit close to it. She also had trouble catching balls when playing with her friends. At home, Joy held her books and tablet very close to her face and often stood in front of the TV to watch movies. After reading or watching TV, she would complain of headaches.

At first, her parents thought she might be lazy or not paying attention. But as the problems persisted, they took her to an eye examination with an optometrist.

The optometrist found that Joy had myopia (nearsightedness) and convergence insufficiency, which made it hard for her eyes to work together. This diagnosis was a game-changer for Joy and her parents because little did anyone know Joy was battling with myopia and convergence insufficiency, causing her vision problems. They realized that her difficulties were because of a treatable vision issue.

The good news was that with glasses to correct her myopia and vision therapy for her convergence insufficiency, Joy’s difficulties began to improve. She could see the board, catch balls effortlessly, and read without headaches.

Joy’s parents were relieved and realized that her struggles were not because of laziness but because of vision problems. Thanks to a visit to the optometrist.

Joy’s confidence grew as she excelled in school and sports. Her parents scheduled regular eye examinations to monitor her vision and observe if there were potential problems.

The moral of the story?  It is essential to notice warning signs for children’s vision and seek professional help. Imagine what could have happened to Joy if her parents had ignored those signs!
