SPECTACLES FOR MYOPIA CONTROL

Myopia management or Myopia control are terms interchangeably used to describe the clinical care required for young adults and children with nearsightedness (myopia). Having said that, it may interest you to know that these glasses or spectacles are not just the conventional types but are of specific design. The reason is that the standard single-vision glasses do not slow the progression (worsening) of myopia; they can at best correct the blurred vision that comes with myopia. However, myopia-controlling spectacles can both work to slow down myopia progression and correct the blurred vision of myopia.

Wearing them is completely safe and adapting or adjusting to them is usually easy. The only downside is related to the limitations that glasses can impose on sports and active lifestyles. These glasses may include:

  • Bifocal glasses: also known as myopilux, these lenses have a moderate effect in slowing down myopia as they provide both refractive correction and myopia control efficacy.
  • Multi-focal glasses or Progressive additional lenses: are not as effective as the other option but they sure have minimal impact in controlling myopia.
  •  Research with strong scientific evidence has shown that the most effective spectacle options to control myopia are special designs with lenslets (these are numerous, 1 mm-sized mini lenses scattered across the surface of the main spectacle lenses although another design of these lenses uses diffusion of light to slow down myopia). For example Miyosmart spectacle lenses.
