Did you know that myopia can continue to worsen (progress) even when you wear conventional glasses?
It may interest you that myopia can progress, especially in children. That is why each time a myopic child visits the eye doctor; the prescription worsens even when the child wears glasses. Shocking right?
Here is why a child with myopia needs not just conventional glasses to correct myopia but a unique form of correction that will control myopia progression.
Now, we would like you to pay attention to this, particularly if you have someone around you who is shortsighted (myopic) and is under 18 or below ten years of age.
WHAT IS MYOPIA PROGRESSION?
Myopia progression means worsening or development of myopia leading to the increase of prescription; the increase may cause myopic prescriptions to be so high that other degeneration begins to take place at the back of the eye. Children aged 6-10 show rapid progression of myopia; however, young adults can also suffer myopia progression, although at a slower rate than children and teenagers. It means if a child is diagnosed with myopia before age 10, if not controlled, myopia deteriorates every few to several months until the late teenage years or early twenties.
FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MYOPIA PROGRESSION.
Before we go on, let us put some facts straight. Myopia will develop or progress faster:
- If a child is less than nine years
- If at least one parent is myopic
- If the time spent outdoors is less than 1.5 hours per day
- If the time spent on near work is more than 2.5 hours per day
- If the child is of East Asian ethnicity
If your ward or someone you know has at least 3 of the above, then myopia development or progression is inevitable.
We will stop here, and in our next post, we will talk about myopia control. Visit TREETOP VISION EYE CENTRE (TREVEC), the best eye clinic in Utako Abuja, for a comprehensive eye examination.
