In the previous post, we discussed the different categories of vision or eye problems; therefore, our focus now would be on one of the categories, namely refractive error.
Before we dive into refractive error, we will briefly explain how the eyes function to enable us to see or have good vision.
HOW THE EYES FUNCTION TO ENABLE VISION.
Vision occurs with the help of light that shines on objects, and the rays of light from the objects are reflected into our eyes for us to see them; it explains why we cannot see in the dark because objects around us cannot reflect light rays.
So, these reflected light rays go into the eyes in parallel form (parallel lines do not meet, right?). When it gets to the first surface of the eye (cornea), the parallel rays bend (refract) towards each other. Since these two light rays are no longer parallel, they would meet. As the rays advance into the eyes, the structures within the eyes direct the light rays to converge at the back of the eye (retina) for objects to be visually perceived.
However, error occurs when the rays meet before or after the retina, making objects blurry. This error is called an error of refraction or refraction error.
WHAT IS REFRACTIVE ERROR?
The term refractive error comprises two words:
Refractive: This means the bending of light rays as they pass through a medium
Error: It means a mistake or anomaly.
Therefore, refractive error is an eye condition that occurs when the eyes cannot bend and focus light correctly to the retina (a layer of light-sensitive tissues located at the back of the eyes). The most common vision problems are refractive errors.
