Our eyes are delicate organs and windows in which we see the world because they allow us to see and experience the world around us. Regardless of how important our eyes are, they are also vulnerable to dangers ranging from poor nutrition, harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, blue lights from screens, and inadequate care. Adding to that the effect of smoking, which threatens not just our vision but our overall well-being.
It is clear as day that the eyes need adequate care and protection. Therefore, we will take a closer look at the dangers of smoking to the eyes and provide practical tips to protect our precious assets (eyes),  keeping them safe and healthy.

 THE LINK BETWEEN SMOKING AND THE EYES.

Have you ever heard of the saying smokers are liable to die young? Funny enough, the producers of cigarettes wrote that on every pack of cigarettes. But did you know that smokers are also liable to develop vision loss much earlier than usual?
Smoking is known to cause heart disease and lung cancer, but what most people haven’t realized is that smoking can lead to vision loss. If a person smokes actively or passively, that means such a person is twice as likely to develop smoke-related eye conditions compared with a person who does not smoke, also the person is three times more likely to develop vision loss due to these eye condition’s.

Note: A passive smoker includes those who do not smoke but are continuously around smokers.

WHAT ARE CIGARETTES MADE UP OF?

You may be wondering what cigarettes are made of to warrant such warnings. Cigarettes contain nicotine, formaldehyde, lead, arsenic ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and radioactive elements. Cigarettes contain more than 7000 chemicals. These toxins and chemicals do not stop at the lungs; they travel to other parts of the body system, the eyes included, and cause severe damage. No wonder it is said “smokers are liable to die young”.
