INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BLINKING, NO ONE HAS TOLD YOU

DID YOU KNOW THAT BLINK RATES CAN TELL IF THERE IS A PROBLEM IN THE BRAIN?

Although there is no particular number that defines excessive blinking however blinking becomes too much when it is a hindrance to our daily activities and also our quality of life.

Studies have shown that some children of about five years develop compulsive blinking habits. Although it is unclear why it happens, it is usually self-limiting (it goes away on its own after a few months).

COMMON CAUSES OF EXCESSIVE BLINKING.

In adults, excessive blinking may be due to;

  • Eyelid inflammation (Blepharitis)
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Eye strain or fatigue
  • Allergies
  • Eye injuries
  • When eyelashes curl towards the eyes rather than away from it (Trichiasis)
  • Eye infections
  • Stress

When a baby or toddler  blinks excessively, it could be due to;

  • Vision issues that require glasses (refractive errors).
  • Environmental changes.
  • Crossed eyes (strabismus).
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eyes).
  • When their eyes turn inwards or outwards (Esotropia/Exotropia).

HOW TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE BLINKING.

Excessive blinking is self-limiting. However, a few lifestyle changes might help to develop healthy blinking habits, and they include:

  • Avoid smoking and passive smoking, as these habits dry out the eyes and affect blink rates.
  • Engage in relaxing activities because high stress levels affect blinking.
  • Limit screen time before bed by avoiding screens for at least an hour before bedtime.
  • Take frequent breaks while focusing on a single point like reading or staring at screens for prolonged periods.
  • Ensure adequate lighting in your environment.
  • Use lubricating eye drops as supplements to natural tears when you experience dry eyes.
  • Get regular eye exams.
  • Promote healthy blinking with simple eye exercises like rolling the eyes or gently massaging the eyes in a circular motion.

FINAL THOUGHTS.
