HOW TO GET RID OF FOREIGN BODIES IN THE EYES.

Our eyes are very good at expelling foreign bodies trapped in them as long as we do not excessively interfere with their natural process. So if a foreign body is not embedded, tears, blinking, and mucous production will expel the foreign bodies, by pushing the objects into the inner corner of the eyes next to the nose, and once they are there, it is usually easy to get it out of the eye which is not by blowing air into the eyes.

HOW TO GET RID OF FOREIGN BODIES TRAPPED IN THE EYES.

A step-by-step guide to enable the careful removal of irritants includes;

  • FLUSHING WITH SALINE OR WATER: In the absence of saline water, gently flush the eye with water because it is a suitable substitute. Tilt the head to the side to allow saline/water to flow from the inner to the outer corner of the eyes, this helps to dislodge the object.
  • BLINKING RAPIDLY:  To blink rapidly, close and open your eyes; the more you blink and tear up, the better chances are to have the particles removed, and that’s because blinking would move the debris while allowing any tears that may have formed to clear the debris out.
  • REMOVING OF CONTACT LENS: Contact lens wearers should endeavor to remove their lenses to prevent trapping any foreign bodies underneath them.
  • LOCATING THE OBJECT: Pull the upper or the lower lid gently and check for the object. If found, try to remove it with a clean cotton swab or damp cloth.
  • AVOID RUBBING THE EYES: Applying pressure or rubbing the eyes can push the trapped particles further, thereby puncturing the eyes or scratching the cornea (corneal abrasion).
  • SEEKING MEDICAL HELP: If the object is large, embedded, and causing severe discomfort, seek medical care immediately from an Optometrist.

CONCLUSION

Foreign body removal from the eyes needs careful attention to avoid further irritations. However, if you are uncomfortable attempting its removal, seek professional help to avoid causing damage. While blowing air into someone’s eyes may seem harmless, it can irritate the eyes, leading to long-term damage. So, therefore, avoid blowing air into the eyes and encourage others to do the same.
