Meet Mr. John a young computer programmer working remotely (works from home) and because of the flexibility of his job and its location independence, he works from the comfort of his room. And for some reason he enjoys staying in dimly lit or dark rooms, so he spends most of his days staring at his computer screen, writing codes for hours no end. Whenever he decides to take breaks from programming he spends his free time playing games on his computer. At first, Mr. John didn’t notice any issues, but after some time he started having some concerns like headaches, eye strain, and dryness of the eyes, including lack of sleep. Thinking it was just a minor issue, Mr. John continued with both his programming and gaming, ignoring any concerns he had, little did he know that he would have taken it seriously.
Aside from Mr. John, most of us are fond of watching news, movies, series, a favorite TV program, or perhaps going through our phones or replying to emails on computers in dark rooms (switched off light bulbs) or love going to the cinema; however cinemas are usually dark rooms with a big screen in front of them.
If you indulge in the practice of using digital screens in dark rooms, you should consider the following;
- Is this a good practice?
- If not, are there consequences?
- If yes are these consequences vision threatening?
