Self-esteem is important because it influences motivation and decision-making in exploring our full potential. People with high self-esteem generally feel confident, secure, and positive either in school or their work environment, and they also engage in healthy relationships with people.
For people with low self-esteem using glasses can affect their confidence and self-perception, which can lead to the following;
- SOCIAL ANXIETY: Avoiding social interactions or feeling shy (uncomfortable) around others.
- INSECURITY: The fear of being mocked, teased, or bullied by their peers in school, especially for children and teenagers. Although adults also feel insecure too that people will perceive them as nerds, or that they cannot see clearly.
- SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS: They worry about their appearance and how people will perceive them; some may even feel embarrassed, unattractive, or awkward.
It is essential to remember that spectacles provide excellent optical correction and protection; it also modifies negative perceptions of an individual by others. However, wearing glasses for the first time for both children and adults may be tricky, but here are some points to always remember:
- If there are any perceived limitations, you can overcome them through self-acceptance combined with a touch of confidence.
- Glasses are ornaments (fashion statements) and a personal expression of yourself, so they don’t necessarily have to be boring, which is where frame selection comes in.
- A person’s intelligence or worth is not defined by wearing glasses. So statements like glasses are meant for nerds are false.
- Finally, be informed that glasses are a normal part of life for some people. So be nice and try not to make jest of a spectacle wearer.
