Did you know that vision problems can lead to low self-esteem? Most people argue the connection between glasses and self-esteem. However, glasses and self-esteem can be closely correlated, specifically for children and teenagers. Hence, the importance of good self-esteem as a spectacle wearer, unfortunately, low self-esteem as a spectacle wearer does not apply only to children or teenagers. Most adults also experience this, yet they live in denial, making statements like; “I am not that old, I do not need glasses or my eyes are sharp and I do not want people to think I cannot see clearly”, forgetting that aside for correction, one can get glasses, to be worn mainly for the protection of the eyes.
Most people in severe need of spectacles may not wear them due to low self-esteem, often expressing concerns like what will people say? Or how will people look at me? Before we paint a relatable scenario, what is self-esteem?
WHAT IS SELF-ESTEEM?
Self-esteem is people’s perceptions of their worth or value. Such perceptions are sometimes from their experiences and social interactions.
Now, imagine a young boy who sets out to play football with his peers but cannot see objects clearly from afar. Countless times during the game, his peers passed the ball for him to catch, yet he missed it, which led to the ball hitting his face several times. Even when he managed to get the ball passed, he could not aim and kick well he kicked the air instead. His mates laughed, mimicked, and bullied him by giving him a nickname. Scarred from this experience, he may never want to play football again or any group sports because he thinks he is not good enough, not knowing that it is because he has a vision problem.
Sad right?
We will stop here today, and in our next post, we will discuss the connection between vision problems and poor social interaction.
