INSTILLING EYE DROPS MADE EASY

Having outlined a few of  the mistakes to avoid while instilling eye drops, we will continue below with a few more tips and a recap on how to instill eye drops;

 SELF MEDICATION

80% of people are guilty of self-diagnosing eye conditions and treating them with eye drops; if an eye problem persists longer than one or two days, schedule a consultation with an Optometrist, and ask your doctor questions to know what you’re taking and when you’re taking it.  Don’t be in a rush to treat an eye issue because the under use or overuse of eye drops can have unintended consequences, so administer eye drops as directed and in situations where you experience the same symptoms of an eye condition that you had previously, still have some leftovers of the eye drops used for it’s treatment; do not restart treatment again without consulting your Optometrist, because something feels the same doesn’t mean it’s the same.

DO NOT SELF MEDICATE!

NOT FOLLOWING THE DOSAGE AS PRESCRIBED BY AN OPTOMETRIST

Sometimes, people think adding more drops makes the pain or redness go faster. It is not correct; every drop in most medications contains what you need at the time, and adding more than one will cause the whole medication to flow out of the eye because the eye may only be able to retain one drop, and an extra will cause it to flow out. Now, when applying drops, tilt your head back or lie down. Don’t focus on the tip of the bottle; focus on something beyond the bottle, such as a point on the ceiling. Use your free hand and gently pull down the skin beneath your lower eyelid to create a pocket below your eyeball. Keep the bottle tip about an inch away from your eyes and release a single drop into the pocket you created. Close your eyelids and press lightly on the corner of the eyelids next to your nose. It helps close the tear duct and prevent the drop from pouring on your checks.

TOUCHING THE TIP DROPPER

Always ensure that the tip of an eye drop doesn’t come in contact with the eyes or eyelashes because it can introduce bacteria that can contaminate the eye drop; this is part of the reason you shouldn’t share eye drops.

CONCLUSION

 Following the few tips outlined, proper instillation of eye drops should not be a problem anymore; mastering these techniques minimizes or nullifies patient-induced reasons for the reduction in the effectiveness of eye drops.
