A man was referred to our facility because he was having eye issues, and upon his arrival, we told him what it entails to consult with our optometrist.
After a comprehensive investigation, the Optometrist recommended a suitable treatment plan, which included an eye ointment, only to be used at night when he is about to sleep for two weeks, and an eye drop to be used three times daily for a month. We booked him for a follow-up appointment in 2 weeks, so he left to return in two weeks; however, as you all know TREVEC CARES, hence we called him in a week to inquire about his eyes and ask if there was an improvement, after some questions he mentioned that he was using the eye ointment meant for night in the daytime! And many other mistakes he indulged in while using these eyes drops.
Most of us are guilty of downplaying the instructions given to us by our Optometrist on how to properly instill eye drops, which may be a reason why these eye drops may not be as effective as they should be. In worst-case scenarios, incorrect instillation may lead to overdose, infections, irritations, and also a waste of medications. Before we discuss patient-induced reasons for a reduction in the effectiveness of eye drops, let’s find out what eye drops are and why you may need them.
WHAT ARE EYE DROPS?
Eye drops are prescribed medications that serve as part of a treatment plan by an Optometrist (eye doctor) for certain eye conditions. However, they are also a means of instilling medicine directly into the eyes.
We will stop here for now, and in our subsequent posts, we will discuss common mistakes to avoid while instilling an eye drop. Until then, if you need further clarifications or have any specific questions, contact TREETOP VISION EYE CENTRE (TREVEC), the best eye clinic in Utako, Abuja.
