VISION PROBLEM VERSUS LEARNING PROBLEM

Did you know that most learning problems are caused by simple refractive error?

Parents and guardians blame their children who do not perform well in school, in turn bringing bad results home, but the question remains: How are they sure that their children or wards can see the board well?

Even if they can see well, can they correctly interpret what they see? Think about it

Before we dive into the topic of discussion, did you know that sight and vision are two different things?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SIGHT AND VISION?

Sight is the ability to see, aided by the eyes. Vision is the ability to interpret clearly and correctly what the eyes see. In other words, the eye is an extension of the brain.

Most parents and guardians are ignorant or fail to understand that vision and learning are closely related, and vision difficulties affect our cognitive skills, especially during childhood. So a child can have good sight, yet poor vision. Since 95% of learning by children in schools is visual, a child needs good vision to learn how to read. Children need to keep their vision clear to continue learning in the classroom.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF VISION-RELATED LEARNING DIFFICULTIES?

There are signs to look out for to know if your child has vision problems that could be affecting their learning process, and they include:

  • Eye squinting
  • Writing uphill or downhill
  • Lack of interest in visual tasks or concentration, such as reading or looking at a computer screen for long periods
  • Cross or non-straight eyes
  • Frequent covering or rubbing of the eyes
  • Headaches or sore eyes after a long period of reading
  • Head turns or tilts when trying to focus
  • Holding reading materials very close to the eyes or getting very close to the television
