TREATMENTS AND PREVENTION OF PINGUECULA

TREATMENT OF PINGUECULA.

Although pinguecula is a harmless growth and usually requires no treatment, there are some instances where it may become red, swollen, cause discomfort, or alter the rate at which the tears wet the eyes. In such cases, treatments are given, usually in drug form or surgery (in rare cases). The following are instances that may require that pinguecula should require surgery;

  • If it grows and overlaps the cornea, therefore it affects vision
  • When it constantly causes severe inflammation in the eyes.
  • When the growth makes it almost impossible to wear contact lenses.
  • And if cosmetically you do not like the appearance of pinguecula in the eye.

One may say I don’t have it, but do you know that there is a high chance that you may develop it later if you fail to carry out some preventive measures that will help reduce your chances of developing one?

PREVENTION OF PINGUECULA.

The best way to prevent it is to protect your eyes from excessive sunlight, smoke, and dust by wearing a visor cap, sunglasses, or prescription glasses with properties to protect your eyes from ultraviolet radiation (UV) coming from the sun. If you work in dry conditions, you also require protective eye wear and artificial tears to moisturize the eyes.

CONCLUSION.

The good news is that pinguecula can be a harmless growth, diagnosed by an optometrist based on its location and appearance, and may not require treatments. However, when pinguecula becomes discomforting, your eye care provider will prescribe an over-the-counter medication, and in any eventualities that may require surgery, consult your optometrist on which pinguecula removal method is best for your eyes. Should you choose to remove it, be informed that pinguecula can grow back even if you have had it surgically removed.
