SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES OF PINGUECULA

CAUSES OF PINGUECULA.

It would interest you to know that excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV), wind, dust irritation and increase in age causes changes in the tissues of the conjunctiva, which results in a small yellowish bump or growth known as pinguecula. This growth does not occur overnight. It takes time for this to happen.

WHO IS AT RISK OF GETTING PINGUECULA?

As long as a person spends a lot of time under the sun without eye protection, the person is at risk of getting pinguecula. However, middle-aged and older adults are more prone to pinguecula because the condition increases with age. Almost everyone has some signs of pinguecula by their 80’s.
