BACTERIAL KERATITIS

Miss. B is a contact lens wearer; she wears her contact lenses without cleaning them properly. She also wears them for extended periods than was recommended by her optometrist.

Quick question: Is it possible for Miss. B to be at a high risk of developing infectious keratitis due to poor contact lens care/ hygiene?

The answer is yes!

BACTERIAL KERATITIS

It is the inflammation of the cornea caused by bacteria. It presents with the following symptoms:

  • Eye pain and redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Excessive tearing
  • Eye discharge
  • Feeling like there is something in the eye

WHERE ARE BACTERIA FOUND?

They are found both in the environment and in the human body.

CAUSES/ RISK FACTORS OF BACTERIAL KERATITIS

  • Poor contact lens hygiene (not disinfecting contact lenses or their cases)
  • Wearing contact lenses for too long, especially overnight wear
  • Using visibly contaminated lens solution
  • Weakened immune system
  • Recent eye injury
