In our previous post, we discussed visual hallucinations, which is a symptom of a condition called Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS). This condition is named after the Swiss scientist and philosopher who discovered it.
WHAT IS CHARLES BONNET SYNDROME?
Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) occurs when vision is significantly lost, leading to visual hallucinations. The loss of vision may be due to diseases like cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy. It can affect anyone.
WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF CHARLES BONNET SYNDROME?
The eyes are our window to the world. For us to see, rays of light get into the eyes and are sent to the retina (the structure of the eyes that is light-sensitive located at the back of the eyes).
The retina converts these light rays to visual impulses, which travel to the brain. However, when vision is lost, the brain makes some adjustments because, without visual impulses from the eyes, the brain cannot process new images. The brain’s adjustments may include recalling stored images or making up images to enable us to see. In turn, it causes visual hallucinations because most of the things seen are not real.
SYMPTOMS OF CHARLES BONNET SYNDROME
The main symptom of CBS is visual hallucinations. However, the length, movement, and color of these hallucinations may vary in individuals. Images may be:
- Repetitive shapes, lines, or dots
- Seeing different or the same objects in every hallucination
- Hallucinating familiar faces or places
- Seeing random or meaningless images
- Hallucinations of landscapes such as waterfalls or mountains
- Realistic animals
- Hallucinations that are frightening, like nightmares or pleasant dreams that are enjoyable.
Healthy vision prevents the brain from creating images that cause visual hallucinations. For healthy vision, the need for routine eye examinations cannot be over-emphasized. You are most welcome Madam Moyosoluwa
Insightful. Thank you
Dr., Thanks for another great exposition. Some of the symptoms mentioned, like hallucinating familiar faces or places;
Seeing random or meaningless images; landscapes such as waterfalls or mountains and realistic animals, et.c., are beginning to sound like they have become spiritual. Don’t you think such needed deliverance? 🤔
You’re welcome
Thank you Biebele for reading the post.
Thank you Daddy Alonge for your comments, well coming from that angle, you can see it like a spiritual attack, more so that we are in Africa, things like that are quite common and given a mystical definitions.
However, coming from a medical stand point, science have been able to explicitly define why these patients see these images, as seen in the post above.
So sir, you are correct when looking at it from any perspective.
Thank you once again for always creating a conversation out of these posts, we sincerely appreciate you sir.
