COLOBOMA

Different structures make up the human eye, and when disruption in the development of these structures occurs, it can result in coloboma.

WHAT IS OCULAR COLOBOMA?

Ocular coloboma is an abnormality of the eye where there is a missing piece of tissue in the structure of the eye. This condition is usually present at birth and can be sporadic, hereditary, or associated with chromosomal abnormalities and can affect one or both eyes.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY THIS?

Anyone can be born with ocular coloboma. Research has shown that 1 out of 10,000 live births are affected by this condition. This condition is usually genetic. There are many types of ocular coloboma, and this depends on where this coloboma occurs. Coloboma of the iris (the colored part of your eye) is the most common and recognizable type.

What other types are there? What are the symptoms of this condition? TREETOP VISION EYE CENTRE, the best eye care clinic in Utako Abuja, will answer these questions in our next post, so stay tuned.
