LOSS OF EYELASHES (MADAROSIS)
Madarosis is a term referring to the rapid loss of eyelashes or eyebrows. However, for this blog post, our focus is on the loss of eyelashes.
IS EYELASHE LOSS NORMAL?
Like hairs on our heads, eyelashes fall off, grow, and replace themselves in a natural cycle every 8 to 10 weeks, so losing one to five lashes is normal daily. However, the extreme loss of eyelashes can be a symptom of underlying health problems of the eyes.
EYE CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE EYELASH LOSS
Eyelashes are prone to infections as the first line of defense to the eye, although there are other reasons people lose more lashes than average. Eyelashes loss may be a symptom of some of these conditions:
- Chronic style or chalazia: infection of oil glands at the base of the eyelids resulting in painful boil
- Blepharitis: inflammation caused by clogged oil glands on the eyelids
- Alopecia areata: this rarely involves other parts. It specifically affects the eyelashes. It is an immune disease that causes loss of hair on the eyelashes.
- Folliculitis: inflammation of hair follicles around the eyelids
- Trichoteiromania: loss of hair due to intense rubbing
- Cosmetic irritation or procedures: loss of eyelashes either due to allergies to makeup, use, and removal of eyelash extensions, use of eyelash curlers, or eyelash glue speeds up shedding of eyelashes.
- Skin cancer: studies have shown that localized loss of eyelashes may be a symptom of eyelid cancer
- Nutritional disorders such as lack of zinc
Clinical signs of the diseases affecting the eyelashes range from mild to chronic. So when you notice an extreme loss of eyelashes due to irritation, itchiness, or inflammation of the eyes, Contact an optometrist immediately. @Sopuru iheanacho,
Firstly this practice is not advisable.
Eye lash loss can still affect someone that wears human lashes(artifical lahes). In this case, the rate of loss can be smaller as compared to others if the loss is caused by a more serious condition. Stay tuned to our next post to see in what conditions this hairs may likely regrow.
Thanks to Trevec for educating on another seemingly simple matter but with serious consequences.
