Studies show that 90% of diabetic eye diseases are preventable if detected and treated early. Several Surveys show that 60% of diabetic people do not undergo the eye checkups recommended by their optometrist.
DIABETIC EYE DISEASES
Any eye disease that results from diabetes is known as diabetic eye disease; they include:
DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Research has shown that this is the leading cause of vision loss in diabetic people. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when excessive glucose in the body causes blood vessels in the eyes to weaken, causing poor blood flow and oxygen supply to the retina. This results in abnormal formation of blood vessels that eventually leak into the retina.
DIABETIC MACULA EDEMA
The macula is a part of the retina (light sensitivity part of the eye) responsible for how well we see details of objects. However, poorly managed diabetes, over time, can cause the tiny blood vessels in the eye to bulge and leak fluid into the retina. This fluid can cause the swelling of the macula. Depending on the severity of this disease, it may either destroy the sharpness of vision or lead to a partial loss of vision or blindness.
CATARACT
This is the cloudiness of the lens present in the eye. Diabetes over time can lead to changes in this lens, thereby putting one with diabetes at a high risk of developing one.
GLAUCOMA
People with diabetes have a high risk of developing glaucoma, which is a disease that damages the eye’s optic nerves (the nerves that connect the eyes to the brain) and leads to vision loss or blindness.
The risk of developing any of these diseases increases the longer a person has diabetes. Diabetes has no cure. The importance of an eye care professional is not just for routine eye exams but also to prevent vision loss from diabetes.
