Five years ago, Mr. Haruna was diagnosed with diabetes; a few years later, he noticed his vision was gradually worsening as he had severe eye pain and red eyes, and he also had difficulties seeing in the dark and other symptoms. To get a quick fix for his eyes, he went to a pharmacy to get eye drops to ease his pain. Unfortunately, these symptoms kept reoccurring.
Mr. Haruna got tired and had to seek a permanent solution. He consulted an Optometrist. He was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, which is one of the eye conditions that can result from diabetes. And because he was trying to manage the situation instead of seeking professional counsel, it progressed and affected his vision. It is understandable if most of us ask, “What is the correlation between diabetes (sugar problem) and the eyes?” Ask no more; we have got you covered!
HOW IS DIABETES RELATED TO THE EYES?
When a person has diabetes, the body system either does not produce or respond to the hormone that delivers blood sugar (glucose) to the cells in the body. Too much of this blood sugar (glucose) in the cells or bloodstream leads to the damage of nerves and blood vessels in the eyes and the whole body system.
We will stop here, and in our next post, we will discuss the eye diseases associated with diabetes.
Having eye exams often or at least once a year is highly recommended, and since the year is still young, it is safe to say most of us haven’t checked our eyes yet. Why not book an appointment with us at TREETOP VISION EYE CENTRE (TREVEC), the best eye clinic located in Utako Abuja, for your routine eye checkups? We look forward to seeing you soon.

I actually use to wonder the connection between diabetes and glaucoma. Thank You TREVEC!
Thank you, Mrs Uzo for the question.
Diabetes is not a condition of the eye but it is a condition of the body system (pancreas) and when not properly managed, complications from this condition can show up in the eye.
