EFFECT OF BLUE LIGHT ON THE EYES

AnĀ important fact mentioned in our previous post is that sunlight is a source of blue light. The sunlight is the primary, brightest, and highest source of blue light. As long as the sun rises every morning, everyone exposed to the sun gets exposed to blue light.

EFFECT OF BLUE LIGHT ON THE EYES

Disruption of night sleep

Darkness triggers the body to produce more melatonin, and this hormone regulates our sleep and wake cycle (circadian rhythm). Exposure to blue light hours before bedtime will cause suppression of the release of melatonin, which in turn disrupts sleep, thereby making it longer for one to fall asleep.

Digital eye strain

This strain is associated with frequent computer users over a long period. There is no age limit to this stain. Users may experience the following: fatigue, dry eyes, tearing, irritation, headaches, and blurred vision.

Damage to the retina

Exposure to blue light over time is a risk factor for the development of age-related macula degeneration.

NOT ALL BLUE LIGHT IS BAD

There are some healthy benefits blue light offers;

  1. Blue light helps to regulate the circadian rhythm.
  2. Helps boost alertness.
  3. It helps boost memory and brain function.
  4. It helps in the treatment of acne.

Because we cannot do away with the sources that emit this blue light, protection in any way possible is the next logical step.

TREETOP VISION EYE CENTER (TREVEC), the best eye care clinic in Utako Abuja, will educate us on ways to protect our eyes from harmful blue light in our upcoming post.
