PART TWO
From our last post we saw some ways most people ignorantly indulge in common eye care mistakes while wearing contact lenses either by how they handle, clean or wear contact lenses. These common mistakes may seem intangible but are very vital in maintaining the health of eyes and continually indulging in these mistakes may cause irreparable damages to vision. We all can agree that contact lenses are actually affordable, and if properly worn and cared for it’s extremely comfortable to use, we would be providing some eye care tips below on how to avoid these very common mistakes while wearing contact lenses:
Buying contact lenses from road side stores
While it may be very economical to do so, the eyes are very sensitive and contact lenses comes in different brands, its best to know which brand works for you and your prescription, this can only be achieved through consultation with an optometrist. Hence to avoid introducing foreign bodies and infection to the eyes its best to get prescribed contact lenses of known brands this obviously shouldn’t be from a roadside store.
Wear contact lens to bed or sleep
Contact lenses could be worn throughout the day, even in the evenings but not through the night as you sleep. Extended use of contact lenses especially at night deprives the eyes of oxygen and encourages bacterial growth which causes eye infections. Although there are some contact lenses that can be worn for extended periods because they allow enough oxygen to go into the eyes, even at that be sure you’re having extended wear contact lenses and ensure it is worn as advised by your Optometrist. Luckily, by simply removing your lenses before bed is all that is required to avoid this eye care mistake.
Swimming or showering with contact lens
Unfortunately, chlorine used to disinfect water doesn’t kill all germs in the water and wearing contact lenses to swim or bath doesn’t also shield the eyes from these germs. Every contact lens is designed to enable the eyes breathe, hence germs or bacteria present in water can get trapped in the contact lens and into the eyes. Always ensure to remove contact lenses before swimming or bathing to avoid eye infections.
Cleaning contact lens with water
It’s not advisable to clean contact lenses with water even if the water has been treated, just as previously discussed water could contain bacteria or germs that can cause damage to the eyes. ONLY contact lens solutions recommended by your optometrist should be used because it specifically manufactured to clean contacts and keep the eyes safe.
